About the artist

Mark Tuschman has worked as a commercial photographer for 26 years, and has earned a reputation as an excellent and sensitive photographer of people in their environments. Mark has worked for Fortune 500 companies, specializing in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, as well as on editorial assignments for magazines such as Smithsonian and GEO.

About the work

It has always been my intent to use photography to communicate in a more socially conscious way, not only to show the degree of human suffering that exists in today’s world but the courage and fortitude that people manifest to overcome it. It has also been my intent to personally understand other cultures and use my photography to communicate my experience to others. The photos from Bhutan fall into this genre as I have recently become very interested in Buddhism and the different values inherent in a society that measures Gross National Happiness as opposed to Gross National Product as a degree of success. As far as my approach to photography, I feel I mostly excel in environmental portraits, although from my Bhutan photographs, I do love landscape as well. In photographing people, I always try to bring out their character with a sense of dignity. The more travels I have made has only further convinced me that it is only fate that determines where we are born. We have no control over who are parents are or if we live in a relatively wealthy society or one that suffers greatly for basic health and survival needs. Hence, I try to give my subjects the dignity they deserve as most people do the best they can under the circumstances presented by their cultures.
